Adding a 6th Gear
« on: September 20, 2008, 07:24:22 PM »

Hello Everyone,

I have owned my 1300R for right at a year now. The bike is awesome and is a much more comfortable ride on longer runs than the 750 Aero I had before.

Here is my question. At highway speeds the 1300 and just about any bike I have ever owned for that matter seems to strain and I find myself reaching for another gear.

Is it possible to add a 6th gear to the stock tranny? If not, can the rear end gears be upgraded or changed in order to lower the RPM's of the engine at highway speeds?

This may be a looooooooooooong shot, but I thought it would be one well worth asking. Let me know your thoughts or give me some direction as to where to look.

Thanks,

BDR

Hmmm? Have you asked this question on the big board of the 1300 owners? Not sure of the 1300 myself. Some will swap out for an 1800, but I don't know if this helps for the missing 6th gear? A lot of the 1800 owners, will swap out their 1800 Final drive for a 1300 FD. Myself included, tho I'm still in the midst of a rebuild. Because they are geared differently, the 1300 FD lowers the RPMs for the 1800 and increases top speed. Though the payoff is the loss of some torque in first gear. And those riders say it now rides like it has that missing 6th gear.

Lone Wolfe,

I am not aware of a "big board" for 1300 owners. Point me in the right direction please and I will post the question there.

Never really thought of the change to an 1800 FD, but it seems to me if 1800 owners are going to the 1300 FD, this may not be the solution to the problem for me.

Thanks for the input and the help with this....

I don't think there is easy fix for you out there.  I know the 1800 can swap the rear end for the 1300 and gives a lower rpm at cruising speed.  I rode a 1300 with a 1800 rear end and that was like a wheelie bike.

Maybe try a taller tire.

For a 1300 owner, the advantage to going to a 1800 final drive will be the extra power at takeoff. This  also means the "need" for a sixth gear feeling would be intensified as the 1800 gearing would leave you at a higher rpm at say 80 mph than the stock 1300 FD would.

Thanks everyone for the direction to the big board. It seems that this has been discussed before. There are those with some insight and those with just comments.

Although this has been discussed, there does not seem to be a solution out there at this time. I will keep searching and if a solution does come to the surface, I will let you all know.

Thanks,

I don't know of any X rider 1300 or 1800 that doesn't catch themselves looking for a 6th gear. I don't want to give up the 1800 take off but am always looking for another gear at about 75.

I seriously don't feel that I've "given up the 1800 take off" with my 1300 final drive on my 1800.  Doesn't help the OP out, but it sure helps the 1800 guys out.

I'm not sure about your 1300, but my 1800 has a sixth gear.  I use it all the time.  Of course, it seems very close to the 5th gear ratio.  But I still use it alot  ;D

I'm bettin' there's no room for another gearset in the stock tranny.  But I don't know sheeeet :o

Yeah, very close in ratio... and you don't actually feel the gear shift move up...  And there's 7th, 8th, and 9th gears in the same place.  And when you shift down from them, it goes directly to 4th.  but all those other gears from 6 - 9 are all in there....   :D :D :D :D ;D ;D ;D

Well geesh, Walley, I didn't know my bike had more than six gears! (In the best Bever voice I can do)

A real sixth would be nice on those 90mph (indicated) cross country excursions!

Slap on a 1300 final drive, it's about as good as 6th for an 1800.
