Texas X Riders
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:11:55 PM »

I live in Louisiana at the moment, have taken a job with my company in the Burleson area. Should be moving the last week in July.

Just wanted to drop in and say hello to everyone. I am looking forward to being back in a city after 10 years here. i grew up in Indianapolis so being back in a big city should be a good thing, I have heard really good things about the DFW area.

I am hoping that the Texas X Riders are better people than alot of the Louisiana people, my wife and i went to a M&G with these A**holes, and I don't think I ever felt more outta place then they made us feel. These guys said they were looking forward to meeting and riding with us. When we met up with them and I told them my name they basically turned their noses up at me, guess my X didn't have enough addons to be cool. Or maybe it was the tattoos? Who cares!!!!

Any way we are planning to come check out the area June 14-19, looking for a homestead to rent first 6 mos to a year then buy, was hoping for a little feedback from you guys, here come the questions,

I have a 7 soon to be 8 yr old girl will be starting the 3rd grade so maybe the lowdown on schools.
Crime rates, we have checked the stats but i find it is better to talk to people that actually live there, is there a town or part of Fort Worth we should stay away from.
My wifey willl be looking for a job when we get there, how is the job market?
I don't think you guys have a helmet law, correct?
Anything else you can think of, feel free to comment
I really appreciate any input anyone has.

Hey, bro!!

Welcome to TEXAS X-riders. We are a great group, and you are welcome with us anytime!!

As far as Ft Worth goes, it's a pretty damn good town. Same crime as most cities it's size. My sister lived in Ft. Worth and loved it!

As far as the helmet law goes, we actually do have one. You can bypass it with a Riders Safety Course or have health insurance. Hell, I have not put on a brain bucket in a year. Not so sure if that's a good thing, but it's definately do-able!! Here's the "law":

Effective September 1, 1997, persons at least 21 years old are exempt from wearing a motorcycle helmet if they:

    * have successfully completed a motorcycle safety course, or
    * are covered by a health insurance plan providing the person with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as a result of an accident while operating or riding upon a motorcycle.

Motorcycle Safety Course. The Basic and Advanced Motorcycle Operator Training Courses meet the helmet exemption requirement. The Advanced Motorcycle Operator Training Course is recommended for experienced licensed motorcyclists.

Health Insurance Plan. Defined as " . . . an individual, group, blanket, or franchise insurance policy, insurance agreement, group hospital services contract, health maintenance organization membership, or employee benefit plan that provides benefits for health care services or for medical or surgical expenses incurred as a result of an accident."

Helmet Exemption Sticker. The Department of Public Safety issues Helmet Exemption stickers to persons who:

    * apply to the department on the form provided; and
    * own the motorcycle listed on the application;
    * provide adequate proof of successful completion of the Basic or Advanced Motorcycle Operator Training Course, or health insurance coverage, and,
    * pay a $5.00 non-refundable fee for each sticker applied for.

Persons operating, or riding upon, a motorcycle with a helmet exemption sticker displayed on the license plate or license plate mounting bracket are presumed to meet the training or insurance requirements for riding without a helmet.

NOTE: Helmet Exemption stickers are serialized and may not be transferred from one motorcycle to another. The sticker expires on the third anniversary of their date of issuance.

Holler if you are ever in Austin. Look forward to meeting you. You should make the trip down for the Republic of Texas Rally in Austin...

Oh crap, tattoos.....   :D

Seriously, there is a pretty good group of X riders around the DFW area.  We have a fair number of meet and greets around the metroplex, but more of them are east of 360 than west of it, because the people who attend tend to be more from east of 360 than west of it.  Like most normal social groups, it's an integration process....  I don't THINK we're a bunch of a-holes...  I'm not a super regular M&G attendee, but I always feel welcome when I make it, and the new people I've met at them always SEEM to be welcomed.  Looking forward to meeting you, and best of luck with the move.  I can't really help you with Forth Worth answers, I don't know much at all about that side of town.

Welcome to Texas!

Just so happens my son has a house for sale in Allen, Tx. Why rent when you could jump right into a mountain of debt. I know he would appreciate it.  ;)

Good luck with the move.

Welcome to the board  O0 I don't feel you'll have the same feelings of being unwelcome in this group of misfits. You don't have to have tattoo's and a lot of bling on your bike to ride with us, we're just a bunch of home folk down here. Take care and ride safe.

First off, welcome to these forums.

Based on what you've said, I think you'll like the Texas X crowd. I'm a relative newcomer, to both motorcycling and to these forums. Every time I've met with folks, they've been friendly and welcoming. My bike is still completely stock, and that doesn't matter to them. What does matter is our shared love of the open road and VTXes (and pancakes).

Don't know where exactly you are looking to move to in the DFW area or how far you are gonna wanna drive but there are several nice areas with good schools the only problem I have is waking the neighbors up every morning on my way to work.  They don't seem to realize that I am saving them electricity by making the use of alarm clocks unnecessary
