600 Mile Service Question
« on: June 03, 2006, 10:19:10 PM »

OK, I am finally at that dreaded stage - 600 miles.  What makes it worse is that it rained here for a week and I could not get the bike ready.  Now, the weather is great and I can't ride...or, can I?  How vital is the 600 service?  What I mean is, will it be a huge risk if I push the 600 mile service to, say, 750?

I'm at 2000, 1956 to be exact.  I was told by the dealer that I had to have it serviced at 600 miles or the bike will fall apart.  160 bucks plus parts and they would fix it up for me.   O0

Long story short, I changed my own oil at 800 miles and I will go by the book on scheduled maintance. (synthetic oil makes the clunking go away downshifting) The book reads that the first service should be 4000 miles of which I will have the dealer handle.  I've always heard the dealer likes to do the first oil change.  Very important, keep reciepts for everything.

So, am I correct in understanding that at nearly 2000 miles, you have not adjusted the valves?

Call Vance at Person-al Repair in Fannett (409 794-1597) if you don't plan to service your bike yourself.  Vance has been taking care of our bikes since we bought them and he is very good and trustworthy.

I got mine in at around 750 miles. No problems. Mine does shift smoother and sound better since I had the initial service done. I will probably do all my own service fron here on out.

Ride it like you stole it!

On the 1300's the first service with valve adjustment should be done at 600.  On the 1800's the first service with valve adjustments should be done at 4k.  It all depends on what bike you have.  When your bike is new you shouldn't go to far over your valve adjustments.

Books says 8k on the valve adj. I figure as long as I stick with thier plan, Warranty issues wont be a problem.

what I meant to say is the first oil change is said to be 4000 and the valves are 8000.  oops

well 600 is for break down of the engine from what I understand is tp get all the stuff out so they change it and clean valves depending on the model as for the 1800 the valves are changed on 8000 first ential oil change is the 600 then another doen at 4000 and another doen at 8000 with the valve adjustment and i believe the spark plugs are changed at 8000 as well on the 1800 from what i have talked to my friends back in houston for my 1800n
