Title: Open Talk - What keeps you from attending Bluebonnet Thunder Rally
Post by: matap on July 06, 2017, 09:11:40 AM
Hello Members,

Next year will be our 15th anniversary of the Bluebonnet Thunder Rally hosted by the Texas X Riders.  Over the last few years we have had some pretty good attendance but we would like more.  We look forward to see those prior members that have attended and those new members that have not had a chance to attend.

While we can't accommodate every single person we try as a whole to organize as best as possible an event for many to enjoy.

With that said, save from health problems or financial burdens, what keeps you/kept you from attending (i.e.: location, time of year, lack of riding skill, lodging, Gumbo, etc.)

Let's hear it.  Remember, health or financial burdens are out of any one person's control except yourself and we don't expect you to put any undue stress from it.  But what keeps you?

We would love to have you attend and enjoy the camaraderie this event is so well known for.

BBT XV - Here we come!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well I has plans on attending the one this year, but my dad's stroke cause me to miss a lot of work. So I this year I fit bot health and financial reasons. Next year might be hard as I'm possibly going to Thailand for 2 weeks early in the year. Will have to see how things play out.

I think most of the answers will be time and money.  Who wouldn't want to hang out with a bunch of great people and ride the Hill Country.  As long as I can hold a bike up I am planning on going to the BBT.

I definitely agree on the Bluebonnets.  Maybe we can do first or second week of April, it should be cooler then as well.

What would get you to come to BBTXV?  Real suggestions please.

I enjoy being with like minded people. The biggest thing for me is it is hard to schedule that much time off and not have my family involved. My wife doesn't ride and will not ride 2 up. We also have custody of a granddaughter now so family comes first. I would like to attend the next one but I will wait and see how it all lines up.
BTW what are the dates for the next BBT.

I can forsee no reason why not to be there. This past year, as most people know, I was sick as a dog but I still showed. Yes I did play Porch Monkey most of the time but I was there and will be again!   :c :c :c :bikerider: :c :c

This is good.  We want to know what as a group we can do to encourage more folks to come.  If there is something about BBT that keeps people away I want to know.

I feel BBT has always been a family affair.  We have had people attend that last few years that didn't even ride or were even passengers for that matter.  Bandera and surrounding has a lot to offer other than motorcycle riding.

Some members just like to ride to Bandera and then kick it all week or weekend long in town only.

I encourage you to bring your family out and make this your family outing vacation.  Dates TBD

For me it comes down to scheduling conflicts.
I commit to doing the Texas VW Classic every
year and my vacation plus the "on off" weekends
just make it hard to attend. Maybe someday.

Porch Monkey is a very important position in the group. Right up there with being the Prez! ;D

For me, it's also scheduling issues. I work for my school district and just can't take off when this event is scheduled in April. I get a week off in March for Spring Break every year, which is March 12-16, 2018 for this upcoming school year.

I know it is really early, if we can set our dates, and get our flyer setup and get it spread early it would give folks more time for planing.  :idontknow:
I plan on doing some movin and groovin come fall, spread flyers everywhere I go :bikerider:

Maybe if we have it earlier, folks might want to come because they haven't been riding much over the winter and have a little cabin fever? Itching to ride. Another issue is late April is getting close to graduation. Some folks get tied up with that.

If you are asking for suggestions...April 19-22nd is my vote for this year...but not every date will work for everyone.  Bluebonnets were pretty scarce this year..but I did think the weather has been relatively good overall the past few years.

As long as I know a few weeks in advance I am good any weekend.  I think Thunder in the Hills is the first weekend in April so as long as we are not there at the same time I am up for early/mid April.  It would be nice for my 4th Rally to actually see Bluebonnets.

Since the early days of BBT, rain has been an issue in the earlier part of April so the BOD has, for the most part, focused on dates later in April or early in May. Rain has a way of deterring many from riding. Especially when camping.

For me it's a new business. I'm getting to the point of being able to pick and choose when I can take time off but I'm not certain yet. If all goes according to plan I'll make it this year. I'd hate to miss the 15th anniversary.  :c :bikerider: :lunch: :c :bikerider: :lunch:

This year was the first time I didn't get rained on so moving the date out didn't help much.  I prefer it to be a little cloudy anyway and if I have to deal with a little rain as a result then so be it.  That being said, I can understand why some do not want to get caught up in the rain.

Rain doesn't really bother me either but I know it is a deterrent.  I do however know this that in the hill country they don't get rain showers like here in Houston that can last several hours.  We get a lot of quick downpours but there are even less.

I just really hate the constant worry of hail over there.  Still it's going to happen if it's going to happen.

Lack of day passes.

(just said that to cheese Gumbo off!)  :stickpoke:

Personally, I don't think BBT could be in better hands than it is currently, with Paul, and of course, Ruthy. Speaking for myself, but I'm sure Bobby Fowler would agree, it was great meeting them during this year's BBT, albeit not in Bandera. I've only been to a couple of BBTs over the years for a couple of reasons, neither of which can be "fixed", so they shouldn't be of concern, but either may also be a reason others don't attend.

1. I don't camp. Did that enough in the Army. I know I could try to score a cabin, which isn't camping, but that leads to...
2. BBT is in the area of Texas where I live, so have ridden it many times already. Riding in the Hill Country is cool and all, but when I go on a motorcycle trip, unless it's Big Bend, it's not in Texas.

Hats off to all of you that have attended and supported the BBT all these years, and of course, the Texas X Riders site. These days, to have a group stick together for 14-15 years is amazing, even more so when one considers that the main reason for getting together originally, the Honda VTX, is no longer built, and not ridden by all anymore.

I know what you mean about riding the Hill country as I have done it many times myself. I go mainly because of the people in the group that I have become friends with over the years and this gives me a chance to see some of them that I may only see a couple of times a year. This is a really good bunch of folks. It is kinda amusing that only about half of the bikes in the group are X Bikes these days but what ya gonna do? I do still have a soft spot for the VTX best bike for the money IMO.
