Title: Big Bend - March 11-15 2017
Post by: Rocket67 on May 23, 2016, 07:40:07 AM
So, I have the green light to use next years Spring Break for a ride to Big Bend. I don't intend on being gone the entire week but at least a few days of it.  I am thinking about leaving Saturday and coming back Wednesday.  It's a long way off so plenty of time to figure out the details.  I will take off the entire week so can be flexible on scheduling.  I think the weather should be the right temp for this long of a ride.

So now, time to start looking at roads/routes.  There is one set of roads the looks a lot like the twisted sisters but other than those I don't see a lot of twisty hilly roads.

Sign me up.  This should be plenty of time for me to plan accordingly.

Day 1 goes through Bandera and to Camp Wood via 337 then north and back down 674 (Through Kickapoo) to Del Rio.  I am trying to stay under 500 miles a day but will not be staying in the same place twice so I don't have to keep retracing my routes.

Day 2 is Del Rio through Terlinguia and to the River Road (170) , then up 67 all the way to Balmorhea.

Day 3 is South on 118 and will end up at the Chisos Basin Lodge and I planned the ride there at only 160 miles so I'll ge there early enough to explore the park on foot and/or on bike.  There is a long dead end road in the park that looks really great to ride but you have to go up and come back the same way unless you want to take a few dirt roads.

I haven't planned after that yet but am going to try and make it the most interesting 2 day trip home.  Maybe heading North from there.

I am taking suggestions on roads to hit while I am there.  My routes are in the planning stage so can easily be changed.

Just give a time and day and I will meet you in Bandera and then go on from there..

It's a bit early to make the call but I am a solid 6 hours from Bandera and I know you are a bit further than I am.  Tentatively we'll propbably be looking at 2PM and then lunch.  We'll be 3 hours from Del Rio so if we get there by 2 and take 45min-60min to eat we could get on the road and hit Del Rio by 6PM and if I am not mistaken that is about when it starts to get dark in March.

I was like what...but get it now.  You taking Friday off for that one?  Isn't Bandera closer?

On a side note, I was thinking about Austin as a destination for Day 4 so we would all be closer to home for the last leg.  Maybe we could find a place on 6th Street to stay the night.    :c

Of course that is 476 miles but I am good with that considering Day 3 is a short day and I planned on spending most of my time in the park.

I talked to a friend who has been in that area and he said the routes I have so far are good.  We even have a stop at the McDonald Observatory.  Day 3 we will have a short ride but will have a chance to ride the "Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive" which is about 48 miles out and 48 miles back unless you want to ride on dirt roads for about 30 miles....and I don't.

I'll start looking to put together day 4 and Day 5 will be your own choice how to get home.  Steve, I am guessing you will go up I35 from Austin and Paul will head toward Katy.

This will be the longest ride in distance and miles I have ever done so really looking forward to making this thing happen.  I don't know how far in advance we should make reservations but it will be Spring Break so I will have an  itinerary soon.

there is a guy on the TWTEX forum that sells ride maps and info of the area. I believe he has property down there and spends alot of time there. Might be worth checking out. I'm thinking of heading that way in the spring myself but want to take a more leisurely pace.

Covering 450 miles a day is leisurely considering there is nothing else going on, just riding.   I'll be stopping every hour or 100 miles depending on where I am.  I am figuring on 10 hours per day at least and that includes stops and what not.

Speaking of, thinking about routing by Caverns of Sonora on the way to Del Rio.

Watching all this rain come down...we have to wonder just how fortunate we were to get the BBT in and not get flooded!  In March...we will have to allow some time for weather delays..

The routes are not in concrete yet.  I am open to route modifications for ease of travel, sights and whatever.  It's a long way to go for sure and I am off the whole week but am planning on having a day or two just in case.  Hopefully we won't be in any flooding areas, it's a long way off and I don't expect to see this same weather next year.  Either way, we can always route around anything as long as we are aware of it beforehand.

I will have two REDA 1 gallon gas cans for any situation we have to back track due to roads under water or just plain ole running out of fuel.

Check'em out Scott.  These are made to fit in the rear corners of our saddlebags.
