Title: Bluebonnet Thunder 2014
Post by: Gumbo on July 24, 2013, 02:36:45 PM
I know it's way early, but I had a Louisiana rider wanting to make the bluebonnet this year and planning his vacation around the event.
Have we considered any dates or locations for the coming year? Or will this take place with the passing of the torch -- not sure exactly how this works.   ???

I doubt the current President is going to set anything up that he is not going to be taking care of.

:flag: :flag: :flag: Gumbo for President!  :flag: :flag: :flag:

So when and where is BBT Gumbo?  :t

Not in town enough for that job  ;D ;D  :c

I would only get everyone lost all of the time anyway. Might not be able to find my way back to the camp ground.   ;D ;D ::)

Home now, then off to Washington state on the 31st.

I just those Louisiana boys know how to pass a good time  and sure would like to see them show up.
Might not be a bad thing to throw out some suggestions on where and when the event would take place this year.
You central Texas bunch seem to be the most active right now, any ideas ??? ???

With the prospect of there not being a new president, we ought to figure this like a statewide meet and greet this year, just try and come up with a good date and place to have it. I think suggestions should be given for when and where, if you have a place that could accomodate a small group, pitch it forward. No law says we have to stay at the LADYBIRD! I heard one suggestion of Bandera last week at mawmaws, and I understood them to say we have one rider that is a pretty much full time resident he spends soooo much time there( you know who I mean  ;D).
Seriously, even if we have it at the ladybird, do we need to be singled out on the hilltop? We could all just show up, pay for camping (always have to anyway), get a nice place under the trees on level ground( never do normally)
may not all be right together, but pick the best  spot someone has for their camp to congregate around and just enjoy ourselves. Kind of like how we were at the Armadillo back in the day. Just a suggestion.

I like the idea of making a move to Bandera, any and all suggestions are welcome. I agree the dates should also be a collaborative decision by the group. If we have no president or board, sure wish someone would step up  I am gone 30 days and home 12, just not enough time to do the proper job or I would throw my hat in the ring, just to keep the group going. I will be happy to support anyone that does step up 100%.
Bandera is now out there, so chime in and make suggestions on locations and dates.  :c

Bandera is a good place.  Kerrville would be another place I would suggest as those who want to get a hotel the rates are usually way cheaper.  In terms of a campground I'm sure some scoping out would be in order and I wouldn't mind just riding out there one weekend and checking out any and all parks/camps/RV locations.  It seems to be a good area in terms of getting there fast since it's close to the highway and just a bit closer to all the roads we normally do.

I agree with Snake, that with limited funds and the lower turn outs over the years making it a Meet & Greet style Rally would be good and beneficial to the forum, in terms of picking up funds again without having all the cost of a rally like prior years.

Also, with shirts, pins and the such indicating BBT XI, if so are desired it would be better to gauge interest at the event and those wanting it can pay in advance so that a specific order is made.  It would be beneficial to probably charge a small premium above the price to purchase and print so that we can generate some funds back in the account.

These are just some ideas to help cope with the huge changes in this group. mainly participation.

also another thought and let me be the Devil's advocate here...........with so many of us owning other bike models and/or brands, why not change the BBT from a "rally for VTX enthusiast" to a "rally for Riding enthusiast", since this is what it's really all about.  All razzing and joking aside of course.

anyways, those are just my thoughts.

I'm up for Bandera...Coming from DFW, I  may have to trailer the bike behind the Jeep if wife comes along.  She is having some hip issues lately.  If wife doesn't come, I'm up for riding down.  Need the date first.  As far as bikes go...Riding is the most important thing, but I do like the VTX appeal.  I don't want it to become another Harley event...no offense intended.
Title: Re: Bluebonnet Thunder 2014
Post by: matap on September 05, 2013, 09:55:45 AM
None taken, but I'm not even talking about Harley's.  I'm talking about other members that have been on here with VTX's and moved on to other makes and models besides Harley's.  Yamahas, Suzuki's, Victory's, etc.  I too like the appeal of the VTX, and history has proven that this forum is more about riding/wrenching  and less about the bike.  I highly doubt this place would turn into the stereotypical Harley scene.  I'm on a forum for Road Glides and you'd be suprised at how little weewee measuring there is that goes on like other forums, and the reason why is the quality of people and interest in riding and wrenching again which is what we have here....good quality people.  We just need more quality members/riders.

Anyways, aside from make/model/color of bike.  Let's make this BBT XI happen.

speaking of turning wrenches..
Isolated an electrical issue with how the previous owner wired those aftermarket lights, replaced starter switch, put on some risers, and added some more chrome.
I will send pics of finished project later.

There is a great RV park in Bandera(Pioneer RV) and it also has good tent camping spots. There is a neat place across the road that have really cute cabins for Hotelers or there is always the Bandera Inn. Kind of a dump but I have stayed there several times. The campground and cabins are within walking distance of downtown with the cool bars that generally have live music. If we are going there, we need to get moving as the cabins tend to fill up .

I agree that we have to get back to making this about the ride and I have some great ideas to do this. Also Hobo has made the suggestion that we move it in the future to different parts of the state. I think that's a great idea. We need to have a great BBT this next year to get interest back. I think Bandera would be great or the Kyote Ranch would be great as well.Again great RV spots great tent camping spots, very cool cabins with a bar and store on site. Either of these spots could be a great place to meet up and it would not cost the TXR much money. I have stayed at all of the spots that I mentioned so I kinda know the area. The one person that knows it even better than me is Hobo. What say you Hobo?

I think this is a great place, I am off until next week, I will make contact and get details if we can settle on a date. (Bluebonnets start in March and peak in April) I am thinking early April better than late April.
How many camping old way in a tent.
How many in a RV/camper
Sure would like to see this tradition keep going. I seen no reason we can't have at the very least have 30 show up, would like to see many more.

As far as other places to go - if we are all on our own?  What about State Parks?  Inks Lake is a great place, lots of spots and if we kinda work together tent camper could share a space with an RV camper.  Water and Electric sites right on the water front.  i know there is an entrance fee and site fee but they offer clean showers and restrooms and keep the parks nice as well.

There my .02,

Maybe not ready for this distance to a new site yet for the spring rally yet, but this is a place I have camped at before, as late as this spring even, so it is still current. Look at the pics, and the accomodations available. If not the spring rally, I know a smaller get together is in order pretty soon. Even has canoeing. Price is good also.

I like the thought of trying new places out but with all Texas has to offer isn't there other spots here in the Lone Star state? With being here since 06 there is so much of the state Ive yet to see. Is there places in the middle of the state besides Fredericksburg with great riding that folks would like to try out? Centrally located to all the major cities? Maybe get a list of 3-5 places talk about it and put it to a vote? Snakes idea is a good one for sure.

As a suggestion for future locations.  This is an idea used from another forum in which I recently attended a National Rally....this past national rally was the 3rd annual.  The first was in Lynchburg, TN, they then pitched various locations, and voted on Peoria, IL for the second one, then pitched locations and St. George, Utah got the pick for the 3rd one.  At this rally various locations were pitched, including Texas (I pitched) and lost vote by 2 to Bethel, Maine.  Only those in attendance voted for the next location.  Each person that pitched would serve as the host and with a team assembled, would organize everything.

Of course we aren't doing something as big as a national rally and we don't have to exactly copy that method, but having someone that knows the area will guarantee we get some good riding in and spend less time figuring out what to ride.

So with that said, IMHO, the best way to change up the locations of BBT in the future is to have a 'Host'.  Someone that is familiar with the area.  i.e. lodging, camping, restaurants (no chains), routes for guided rides

Obviously, the hill country is a favorite because within our group someone knows there way quite well.  We know all the places to eat and hang out, plus maybe some indy shops for breakdowns or what not.

I like the idea of moving it, there is places in Texas I haven't seen yet and wouldn't mind spending it riding with some fellow X Riders.

I agree that we have to get back to making this about the ride and I have some great ideas to do this. Also Hobo has made the suggestion that we move it in the future to different parts of the state. I think that's a great idea. We need to have a great BBT this next year to get interest back. The one person that knows it even better than me is Hobo. What say you Hobo?

I've always thought that moving BBT to different parts of the state would more thoroughly represent our membership, but I also think that the hill country offers the best riding in the state. Thus having it in the hill country every 3rd year or so would keep up tradition as well as insure we don't get burned out on doing the same thing year after year.

I love Bandera and think it would be an excellent place to have the BBT. As Gary mentioned there are many places to stay that are within walking distance from the town and it's many shops and honky tonks. That's why my family has had reunions there for the past 12 years or so.  :c :lunch: :c :lunch:

I'm not sure what it would take to do it, but there's a city park across the street from the cabins and RV park that would make a good place for the Saturday night meeting.

Along with the rest of the hill country, it is very prone to inclement weather in the spring. I've always tried to plan my rides there no earlier than May. It's also a very popular town during the many rallies taking place that time of year. The Pioneer RV park at the end of town is excellent and affordable. Across the street there are 10 or 11 cabins that fill up so fast I always make sure I reserve one months in advance. The cabins run from $80-100 but all have several beds and can be shared to keep things affordable. There are other places to stay but they all fill up quickly when there's something going on. Great care would have to be taken to find a time in the spring when we could be comfortable knowing everyone would have a place to stay.
If I'm going there in the fall, I try to go before November. There's a LOT of shooting going on around that time and the deer have a tendency to move around a lot.  :ohwow:

I also like the idea of moving it around the state.  I've been to all areas of the state, just not on a bike.
I also agree with the weather.  April is iffy ...May is less so.  And I like the idea of more Meet and Greets and Fall Rides leading up to the BBT.

It is Bluebonnet Thunder and the hill country is pretty much central to all of Texas, if your sole purpose is to see sprawling fields of blooming bluebonnets, the Texas Hill Country is the place to be. In addition to having wild fields of the Texas state flower, there are a number of farms in the region. Additionally, towns such as Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Kerrville, Burnet, Marble Falls, Llano, and Kingsland all have bluebonnet festivals or trails during the spring.

We certainly can have other events that move around Texas -- I think BBT should alway be where the bluebonnets are.  ;D

Additionally, towns such as Fredericksburg, Wimberley, Kerrville, Burnet, Marble Falls, Llano, and Kingsland all have bluebonnet festivals or trails during the spring.

We certainly can have other events that move around Texas -- I think BBT should alway be where the bluebonnets are.  ;D
There is not another area with quite as much to offer as the Hill Country. Especially within the riding distance.

So I had to re-read this last page a couple of times. We are or aren't staying in Fredericksburg for BBT next year?

Nothing says we are locked into Fredericksburg, it is our call where it is held.

Lady Bird is not reserved for this year. As of now, there is not a location.

Alright October 19-20 it is.  We'll make another thread on meetup times and places to scope out.  We should probably in that thread make a list of at least 3 potential places that could host us.

Are we still planning on the 19-20th  :bikerider:?  Also, about how many people usually show up for BBT?

Also, wanted to throw a few more places out to check:

Koyote Ranch Resort is in Medina, Texas <---  this one has cabins, RV, tent seems to be a great fit for what we need. www.koyoteranch.com (http://www.koyoteranch.com)
&
Cowboy Capital Campground in PipeCreek, Texas <--- No cabins but has the rest http://www.cowboycapitalrv.com (http://www.cowboycapitalrv.com)

Should still be on.

Typically from 30-40.  that's what the count has been the last two years.
