Solve this.......
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:34:01 PM »

Three salesmen are on the road, looking for a cheap place to roost for the night. They see a motel advertising rooms for $25; it's the cheapest they've seen all day. The motel doesn't look too dirty, so they pull in to check it out.

The clerk tells them that since there are three of them he will have to charge an extra $5. They figure it's worth $30, so they each fork over $10 and head for the room.

Shortly after that the manager comes into the office and sees what the clerk has done. He tells the clerk that he has to refund $5; the marquis outside says $25 and that's all they can charge.

Well, the clerk rationalizes that since he can't split $5 three ways evenly, he'll just refund each of the guys a dollar and keep the other two for himself. So he goes to the room and explains to the three salesmen that he is refunding part of their money. He hands each a dollar and leaves.

With the dollar refund, each of the guys has now paid $9 for the room. $9 times three equals $27. That $27, plus the $2 that the clerk kept, equals $29. Where's the other dollar?

??? That's $27 minus the 2$ that the clerk kept, equals $25. So this must be one of those jokes on me kinda jokes, so lets have it.  :D :D ;D ;D

The point of it is that in the telling of the story, you start the audience adding up. As David pointed out, they should be subtracting down.  It's a 'power of suggestion' thing, and it can really get some people confused. I may have one out of a hundred get it right.

Try this one:

You are on a road exactly four miles long. If you drive the first two miles at thirty miles per hour, how fast must you drive the other two miles to average sixty miles per hour for the four miles?

2*30 + 2X = 4 * 60
(2*30 + 2X = 240)/2
30 + X = 120
X = 90

30+30+90+90 = 240 /4 = 60

90mph?

if you have a circle track that is exactly a mile round...  You average 30mph on your first 2 laps, and 90mph on the next 2 laps, your over all average would be 60mph would it not?

No, because you spent 3X as long going 30mph as you did going 90mph.

2 miles @ 30mph = 4 minutes
2 miles @ 90mph = 1.33 minutes

4 miles / 5.33 minutes = 0.75 miles per minute = 45 mph

On the other hand, if you went 30mph for 4 minutes (2 laps) and 90 mph for 4 minutes (6 laps), then your average would be 60 mph.

Ran into the same thing flying airplanes - If you fly into a headwind for a while, then turn around and return to where you started with a tailwind, your average ground speed is going to be less than the air speed, because you spent longer flying upwind that you did downwind.
