I think I want an 1800
« on: September 07, 2006, 10:39:34 AM »

I thought I wanted to say with the 1300 but I keep getting things pointed out to me that make the 1800 better. I could use a little help with this. Any one know any real good reasons to stay with the 1300?

Damn you Crewsn!!!!

they are pretty lucky to go further than 110 miles on a tank, thats enough reason for me right thar. but, i do like the way they kick the $hit out of a HD.

It really is all about what you want in the feel and ride. You need to ride a 1800 and see how rides. I love the feel and ride of the 1800, I do a lot of long rides and like the bigger bike, but for running around town and short trips(2hrs or so) I like smaller bikes. Everyone has a differant feel. I am stock and get 130mi before the light comes on and around 25 to 30 before shut down.

Both are great bikes and the one that is best for you depends upon a variety of personal factors. Only you can decide.  So go to a dealer and take a test ride and see what you think.  But here are some facts to consider:

1800 cc V 1300 cc. Thats a 38.5% larger engine. Like many things in life "size matters"

1800C dry weight = 734 pounds V 1300C dry weight 641 pounds. Thats only a 93 pound or 14.5% increase in weight.

1800 has duel rotors on the front wheel V one rotor for the 1300.

1800 has linked brakes V 1300 NOT.  Linked brakes = safer more controlled stops. You either love'em or hate'em.  I didn't fully appreciate the linked brakes until I recently test drove the Suzuki M109R.  See http://www.vtxoa.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=138106&highlight=m109. Scroll about 2/3 the way down the thread.

1800 fuel injection V 1300 carburetor. Fuel injection is generally considered to be a more efficient method of delivering the optimal air/fuel mixture over a wide range of conditions to the engine with translates to better performance.  It also gives you more flexibility if you want to go the fuel manager route. Although personally I chosen not to go with a fuel manager. At a minimum on a cold morning you start the 1800 and go, no waiting for the carburetor to warm up.

1800 has hydrolic clutch V NOT on the 1300.  Gotta hate that traffic jam.

1800C Spec 1 = $13,100 V 1300C = $9,599.  I was lucky enough to get my 03 1800C during the 2004 1800 inventory reduction sale which was admittly one of the biggest factors in my decision to go with the 1800 over the 1300. But if your interested in buying a used bike there are a ton of used 1800's on Ebay. Some with very nice after market options, many with super low miles and most under $9k.

When crusin with a crowd I get between 40 and 45 MPG.  My fuel light will come on at 130 miles and I put in 3.0 gallons just like clockwork.  And I still have roughly 1.8 gallons or 75 miles left in the tank. Although I have never really tested that. When I am ridding by myself or a smaller group my mileage is more like 35 MPG. It's all in the wrist.

I'll be up at Austin Bike night tonight if you want to talk more about it. I'll be crusin up from New Braunfels at 35 MPG.

I had a 1300.  If I ever get another Honda, it will be another 1300.  The need for speed only bites me a few times a year.  Not enough to justify suffering through the disgusting water fart sound of an 1800 ALL the time.  Also, nature handled that size issue for me long long ago. O0 ::) ;)

As for speed, the 1800 (stock) isn't that fast at top end, which is surprising for a bike with a motor as big as it has.  But, it has pretty massive amounts of low end torque.  I think mine could climb the Grand Canyon... straight up the wall.

sorry trent, just pointing out some of the reasons i went with the 1800. another big factor for me was the fact that about 80% of my riding is 2-up. not saying the 1300 can't handle it but having the extra get up and go is nice. as far as mpg, my reserve light comes on about 120-130 if riding conservatively if not then about 100-110. like some others said just depends on what you want.

I get about between 170 and 200 miles out of a 5.3 gallon tank.  On a mellow week the light blinks from 150 to 170 and is on from 170 and ^.  BTW at racetrack yesterday I put in 5.27 gallons.  I havn't gauged it recently since I got the PC3.

I rode a 1300 and absolutly hated the clutch.  I actually killed it twice before it moved.  I do like the idea of the smaller frame.  It seems to turn alot easier.  Then agian I would perfer a sport bike.

I agree with everyone else.  Ride one to see if you can man-handle the beast. Most importantly, spend the little extra and get the spec 2.

Yamaha just came out with a 1300Vstar fuel injected... more power than honda VTx 1300   I would wait, I bet you that Honda will put fuel injection to the 1300 soon...  If you really want an 1800 get the M109R with has alot more power, better brakes, 240 rear tire (if it matter to you) a clock, tach, and is cheaper.

1800 are ok but I think Honda got cocky with their succes and increased the price with out doing anything major to improve the bike,  an m109R will leave a VTX1800 in the dust.

I have a 1300 and I like it, If I had an 1800, I think I also would like it,   bigger doe not nessesarily mean better.  I have a sport bike that helps with my need for speed...  good luck with your choice

Doesn't ride as well, less comfortable for longer rides, less accessories, less classic looks, who needs a tach on a v-twin cruiser?  Cheaper?  Hm.  I don't recall being floored by the price.
