Title: High Temp Engine Paint
Post by: BobWd on June 18, 2015, 12:48:59 PM
I'm just gonna throw this out there & see what happens.
I lost one of my heat shields off of my V & H pipes a while back. They want way to much $ to replace it. I wrapped my pipes with heat wrap, and also have the the rear one double wrapped, and I am still getting heat on my right leg.
Here's the question, would a few coats of high temp paint work better than the wrap? I definitely think it would look better.
ANY THOUGHTS????

I am no expert but I think high heat paint just means it wont peal off when exposed to high heat like regular paint would. If asbestos wasn't :flag: so illegal and deadly it would be the perfect heat shield.

Sorry but ^^^ is true.  The high temp paint is made to withstand the head not shield it.  I think you are just SOL, unless you find someone CL or VTXOA used...

 :agree: :agree:

Thanks guys!!

That's what I was thinking, just needed some conformation. I'm getting ready to turn my exhaust into duals and I still have the heat shield for the front pipe so maybe I can cut it up and use pieces of it for the back one. If not, maybe buy a couple of the universal ones. Mainly just need to cover the rear pipe where it turns towards the front of the bike because that's where my leg sits.

The exhaust on this bike is what I am going to try & do on my bike.

You could just get a heat shield for your leg.

...or just grow your right leg longer!   ;D

Good luck on the true duals...I've seen some 1800 guys on the OA do it, and it looks really good.

I noticed that my air horn was mounted right in the way of where I'm going to run the crossover pipe so I moved it. Dang thing was to big to put anywhere else.

I now have my crossover pipe so I can start working on my dual set up!

Will be interesting to see how it works out

If what's in my head ends up transferring to the bike, it should look awesome!!

I want to cut both pipes off right before they turn up and the lower pipe will get the crossover attached to it. I'll take a piece off of the crossover pipe and bring the top pipe straight back. My welder friend who is helping me has his original mufflers off of his Electra Glide Ultra that we will put on the bike. I still have the chrome heat shield for the front pipe which I can cut to fit and then see if I can use any of the leftover piece for the rear pipe. Hangers for the mufflers will be attached to the lower bolts that are holding my saddlebags on.
It all sounds pretty simple but I imagine that we will run into a few problems along the way. Good thing we both have over 25 years each as mechanics!!!!

Gonna pic up a set of factory mufflers off of a 2011 Streetglide tomorrow. Found em on Craig's list for $50.00, I offered the $40.00 & he bit.

Here's a pic of the mufflers. One more step closer.

I had someone on the VTXOA comment about this same post I posted over there and he said something to the effect of I would burn up my cylinder because the bends in the pipe would create to much back pressure. I was a mechanic by trade for 26 years & I have never heard of something like that. Besides, if that is true, how does H/D keep from doing that on all of their touring models with the dual exhaust??

Obviously that guy never heard of properly tuning a motor to avoid that.  You'll be fine.  But be sure to tune it correctly by any means you see fit.

Picked all of this up for $50.00. I think I have everything I need now to make the dual system work. Will start on it next week.

Maybe thats why they are always broke???  :pot:

Just need to make the muffler mounts & then see if I can modify some of those Harley heat shields to fit!!

Caution! Danger Will Roberson!! Your coolant reservoir is close to you pipe. Possible melt down! Can you change your oil filter?

I noticed that while looking at the pic. Gonna look at it a little closer this afternoon when I go back out to my friends shop. I do have some heat wrap and extra heat shields I could use.

:good:  :bikerider::good:  :bikerider::good: :bikerider: :good: :bikerider:

Final set of pics cause I AM FINISHED!!!!

1.     I put a heat shield on the crossover pipe just in case. There is 2 1/2" or 3" inches in between it and the coolant jug so I should be good there.
2.     Left side pipe & my welding friend. It was his shop we used.
3.     Heat shields fabricated.
4.     Right side pipe.

It sounds a heck of lot more mellow and is a lot quieter than the V&H baffles.

Thanks guys!! I really do like the sound. It doesn't give me a headache when I ride anymore because the old pipes exited right under my saddlebag. Now it is out past it.

Mounted some Harley Road King driving lights & turn signals. If I keep going, I may end up with a Honda Davidson! LOL

I wish the Harley had a radiator.  That being said, when the fan kicked on with the VTX that heat was just as bad.

My best friend has a 2010 CVO Screamin' Eagle Electra Glide Ultra. He took his wife on a trip down to ride the Three Sisters the 2nd week of August. He had to stop a few times & cool his bike down cause the temps were getting up close to 100.

I rode 500 miles from Arkansas to Texas in July and only stopped for gas.  No probelms with overheating.....his bike should have been fine.

I don't think it was an overheating problem as much as it was the amount of heat coming off the engine, making him uncomfortable.

They come pretty lean from the factory which does not help.  I have some classy leather heat shields under the front of the seat and I have an FP3 (V&H Fuel Pack) that changes the ECU mapping and runs the bike richer which also helps heat issues.  I can ride all day on it and no problem.  Feel free so have your buddy contact me and I can give him some links or just info in general.

This sounds more like it.  These bikes can take a ridiculous amount of heat before eminent failure.
