camping
« on: June 05, 2006, 05:09:22 PM »

I know it's not motorcycle related but thought I'd ask anyway.

Thinking of taking the kid camping, fishing, swimming this summer somewhere. Someplace relatively cheap and not hundreds of miles away (b/c of the expense - San ANtonio is our big expense this summer). But not directly near here either b/c we've BTDT every day! lol!

So - where is a good place to go camping that within a hundred or so miles of Houston? That's pretty - good camping (tent camping), good swimming, and some fishing? Maybe some hiking. Something not flat and ugly. Any ideas?

Just to make it motorcycle related - maybe we'll take the bikes.  ::)

It's a little more than a hundred miles, but Lake Hawkins in east Texas is really nice.

Want to look for a good place to go camping try www.texasonline.com it has a list of all the state parks  and any other info you will need to find what you are looking for.  I have found some great out of the way parks that had everything you want and a little more.

Yea, this is a good one, but right now you can camp on the lake bed.  It's still about 5 ft. low from hurricane rita. I saw this one dude with a riding lawnmower out on the lake cutting his grass about 20 feet from his bulkhead.

This isn't anything to get real excited about, but of course I live here.
I think it just reopened from the Rita damage. I havn't been back in there. It's right here in Lumberton and when the creek's down the sand bars are really nice. One plus is you are only 10 minute from a store, pharmacy or hardware or help if needed...me. I use to take my three sons down on the creek for a week in the summer before it was made into a preserve. I was always amazed at how a week away from it all helps everyones disposition.

since i was about 5, weve gone camping at lake sam rayburn at the sandy creek area.  its near jasper in angelina county.  its a massive lake and quite beautiful.  lots of good fishing and swimming as well.  the sandy creek part is in the country and very much tent camping, although it is on camp sites and has running water.  theres alsp twin dykes pretty much on the other side of the lake that has tent sites, as well as cabins and the marina and stuff like that....
oh, and its all hills out there ;)

Just so you know, there are some REALLY big bass in the lake (Raven Lake) at Huntsville State Park. There are also some huge catfish in there, as well as crappie and bream. Just be careful of the alligators; there are a lot of them and they've become way too accustomed to people.

Thanks everyone! I'll look into all of those.

And if there's any other suggestions, swimming is more important than fishing!  ;D (for me anyway! lol)

Holly Park Marina on Toledo Bend.

Be sure to ask about water level and affect on swimming pier.  Stayed there a couple of times.  Had fun.  Good folks.  Hades hot this time of year though.
