Front tire tread-life...
« on: May 08, 2006, 02:06:42 PM »

Just a few more weeks 'til ROT and think I should re-shoe the front.

How many miles are folks putting on 1800R front tires before replacing them?

I've still got tread left, but I'm thinking it's at the point that it might not hold real well (in the rain)anymore.

Any thoughts on a better choice than a stock replacement?

I still have my stock Dunlop's on, but when my tires need to be replaced, I'm putting on Avon's.

Need help deciding?  Imagine this 70 MPH on your favorite secondary road, in the midst of a beautiful long sweeper, leaning hard and BOOM sudden loss of air pressure on your front tyre.  End of a beautiful day.

I replaced my stock Dunlaps at 6,500 miles because they were pretty well shot.  Pittsburgh roads are hard on tyres. (or could it be me  ;) I put on a Metzler 880's stock size on the front and 200 on the back.  Wore the backout at 7K miles and replaced it with the Bridgestone BattleAxe.  The front tyre now has 9K miles and according to the tread-depth-o-meter still has 45% of it tread.  All this on a 2003 1800 C.  A buddy of mine at about the same time put Avons on his 1800 R and has had almost the identical experience.  That is replacing the rear tyre before the front.  Of course he and I ride a lot together so this may say more about our driving habits than the durability of the tyre.

It's simple, look at the wear bands in the treads. If the wear bands are level with the treads it's time to replace them.  Too many people run tires well beyond their safe wear point, it's just not a good idea.  Mileage will vary with riding style so you can't go on other's experience.  Personally, I wear both out at the same time because I use the front brake a lot and I spin the rear a lot.

Plenty of tread left on the sides, but nearly bald in the middle; Either too much air or I've become a coward in the turns?!

Anyway... Since I have an almost new 200 Dunlop on the rear, I ordered a Dunlop Elite 3 for the front; Supposed to last longer and work better than the OEM D251F.

If I can get 'em to wear out at the same time I'll try a set of Avons or Metzlers next time.

Very true, I don't think there is a straight  road in Pittsburgh, north hills anyway.

I am about the same the front tire is wearing out a lot faster than the back.  I have about 8k miles on both tires and when the dealer inspected he said that I could probably get another 1k out of the front.

I called HAL to see if he is having a Memorial weekend sale so that I can buy a set of Metzlers but have not seen any postings yet on the national board.

Any suggestions on who can install the tires on for a fair price?  :-\

Place in Pasadena, Located just north of Spencer on Shaver. Called Discount MOtorcycle Tire. Will even put then on if you bring the tire. They WILL NOT put a car tire on a motorcycle.. They do have good prices for tires..  :)
