Title: Arkansas, October 9-12, 2014
Post by: JustinVTX on May 16, 2014, 06:30:25 PM
At BBT, Gumbo talked about going to Arkansas and meeting at Queen Wilhelmina lodge and riding Skyline Drive, the pig trail and whatever else we can find.  Is anyone interested in doing this?  We were thinking about going up for Columbus Day weekend, which would be Oct 11-13.  We can either stay at the lodge or over in Mena, Ar.

Any thoughts or ideas?

I just saw where the lodge is closed for renovations until spring 2015, but there are accommodations nearby.

Unfortunately the whole month of October is booked for us with the preparation and commencement of our fire department's annual fundraiser.  They would set us on fire if we took off several days.

The http://www.limetreeinn.com/ (http://www.limetreeinn.com/) is the best room value to be found around... cheap and clean. They have a buffet noon and night thats excellent. Great riding all around... although paperpeddler will not like the speed limits... a 75 mph (texas) road there carries a 60 mph limit, but makes for better scenery viewing. Those of you from south/centex will love the greenery! I'll see you there. This is my neck of the woods!

The Limetree Hotel said rates would be regular king would be $78.00 plus tax, and a delux king would be $86.00 plus tax

There are cheaper motels if someone wants one, but they aren't that great.  Stayed in one of those overnight the last time the houston gang came up. Wasn't too bad though.

Sounds like a plan and hope to make that run. The only thing depends on if I have to have shoulder surgery how fast I rehab. We are trying not to go that route and that will be the last resort.

I called and emailed -- the lady I talked too was much more generous than Marty's email; as Marty is the "boss" I'm assuming what he emailed pulls rank over what she said

Following is what Marty emailed -- I say everyone call and convince him to give us a group rate 10/9 - 10/12 (this works better for me with work schedule and yes I know I'm being selfish  :o )

sorry it took so long to get back to you.  that is a busy weekend, we
wouldn't be able to give a discount then.  a regular king would be $78.00
plus tax, and a delux king would be $86.00 plus tax.  if you could come the
weekend before, on the 3rd and 4th, it would be $71.70 and $78.90.  i don't
think they would charge extra for the conference room, especially if you ate
in the restaurant.  the food is really good.  please give me a call to make
your reservation.  ask for Marty.  thank you

Wow, I just got back and can say that it was one amazing ride.  Riding the Pig Trail was pretty awesome too.  We stayed in a hotel in Eureka Springs across from the satellite Harley store and it was about $42/night (2 queen beds) and not horrible plus it's across the street from the Bar and Grill so good food and beer but they close at 10PM.  There are several rides including the Pig Trail that you can take from Eureka Springs and that place is beautiful.  I am seriously thinking about this ride....have to see when and where and if I can afford the vacation.  I'll go back and read the thread to see what dates, location, etc..

Is there a plan for getting there?  Once we get there?  My last ride up involved a bit too much planning on the fly and I would like to schedule a little better this round.   I am thinking if I leave early enough on Thursday I can get to Mena for a late lunch then go ride but, trying to hit the Pig Trail will not work at all.  It would have to be something closer to Mena and much shorter.

I think DavidJ and myself will be riding up early Thursday.  Plan on possibly taking I45 to 19 then 21North.  Could plan on meeting at the gas station there at 45 and 1097 in Conroe about 8am.

EDIT: There is a Jack in the box on the feeder on the East side of I45 and there is an Chevron and Shell on the West side so gas up and meet for breakfast?

(BTW, I know it's early....I like to plan ahead  :c )

My brother and sister in low used to live there.  I can certainly ask them for recommendations.  Is there a general consensus as to the type?  I can say that the MX food generally sucks there.   :hurl:  Or so I have experienced.

Don't know anything about these other than they all have decent reviews on Google and appear to be along the route that we are taking.

I have eaten at Jaxx before.  It is pretty good from what I can remember.  It is right in the middle of downtown Paris (if there is such a thing)  It is also right by the square, which would have ample parking and shaded hang out space for the amount of bikes we will have.

Silly question!  How is everybody communicating during the ride?  BT, CB, hand signals, smoke signals, homing pigeons, etc?

No takers here huh.  I guess this is a fairly quiet bunch on the road.

Talked to my friend in Paris and asked  him about places to eat.
Said if want a good burger for sure go to Jaxx.
Although if want a wider menu go to

Its on the loop and easy off and easy on.

Here is a GPX of a route for the Houston group.  This one has a stop at Magel's Grill in Paris which is my vote for the lunch/meet-up.  I am also good with Jaxx's as well.  It looks like it is just over 4 hours from Houston to Paris so an 11:30-12:00 meeting time would be great.

Here is the file:

Actually, I had two...one was a little fuzzy and one had the top of the batwing cut off.  I gave it to my dad and he fused them together and added some effects.  And yes, it's a bad Cranberries pic.

Here is a link to google map route I posted a GPX for.  This is from the Shell on 1097 and I-45 in Willis to Magel's Grill in Paris to Limetree Inn in Mena.  I assume there is a way to publish this from Google maps but I do not want to try to figure it out.  Anyone else is welcome to do that if you know how.  The GPX is posted a couple posts back.

I thought Chad mentioned Magel's Grill due to N. E. loop and variety and based on a friends recommendation.  SSSSnake mentioned a Chinese food place...but we might want more variety than that at that hour.

The route I posted a few posts up has us stopping at Magel's Grill.  It looks good from the website.  I am really good with anything if we want to change this.

Some of y'all may know, but my father in law has had to move into our this house this past week and there is much work involved in getting him transitioned and comfortable.  I will not be able to make it to Mena.  I was really looking forward to it.  Everyone be safe.
