Won't Start Unless In Neutral
« on: April 23, 2006, 07:59:42 PM »

I have a 2003 1800R, never had any problems, but just recently it won't start unless it's in neutral.  Any ideas?

Are you trying to start it with the kickstand down? Or with the clutch engaged?

Here are the ways the bike will start:

Sidestand down - transmission in neutral - clutch in or out - kill switch on

Sidestand up - transmission in neutral - clutch in or out - kill switch on

Sidestand up - transmission in a gear- clutch IN (disengaged) - kill switch on

Any other combo and it won't start.

IF you've done all these things, then the safety switch on the clutch may be dirty.  If you ride in unfavorable conditions this switch may require periodic cleaning.  To clean it, unplug the two spade connectors (under the clutch reservior), remove the screw that hold the plastic switch.  Take some fine sandpaper (I use 1500) and fold it so you can get in between the contacts and clean them up.  This should fix the problem.

I guess I should have detailed the method I was using.

Kickstand down, tranny in neutral, clutch in or out, kill switch on.

I'll check out the switch and let you know how it turns out.

Thanks so much for the help!!

Dang, sometimes, I'm such a meat head.

The problem I was having was trying to start my bike while in gear, clutch in, kill switch on, sidestand up.

But you pointed me in the right direction.  As soon as I looked at the clutch area, I saw that one of the connectors was off.  I connected it again and bingo, problem fixed.

Thanks,

Hey! I know that dude!

Lots of times the kickstand switch will mess you up the same way. My pet buzzard pulled mine off onetime. really pissed me off when I figured out what happened!

Mostly fried chicken! Had the last one for two and a half years, I've had five through the years. Sure can tear stuff up though. Thought I had a slow leak once... heard a hiss one day, thought maybe it was a chickensnake or a hognose snake... walked around the car, and there was buzzy playin with the tire valve on my bike!
