1800N Valve Adjustment
« on: April 01, 2015, 07:12:46 AM »

Hi Guys,

I'm in NW Houston and it's time to do the 8k mile valve adjustment on my 1800N.  I do most of the wrench turning on my vehicles but I've never tackled this type of adjustment on a motorcycle and quite frankly I'm afraid of screwing it up.  Can anyone recommend a shop I can trust to do this job and do it correctly?

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve, I think if I recall that Honda of Houston on 290 and west rd will do it for around $300.00  I can't exactly remember.  It's actually a fairly easy task.  You don't have to remove much.  Yuu will need some feeler gauges that most folks end up bending at about a 45 degree angle to reach the valve tappets and most if not done aleady do a desmog mod on it.

I bet someone in the area wouldn't mind helping...time permitting of course.

Thanks for the tip.  My desmog was completed long ago so just need to do the valves. I'll look at the YouTube videos to see if I want to tackle it myself but I'm leaning toward having a pro handle it.

Lance Hinton helped me do the valves on my 1800 last summer.  I took off everything before he arrived and it didn't take us long.
He told me what to do, and I did it...but I would need his assistance again before I feel confident in tackling it solo.
You can't get in a rush...take your time.    Engine has to be cold!  and the back valve covers and valves are a b*tch to get to.

The stealers have been known to charge for the repair, but not actually do it.  Make sure you trust the repair shop.  I know of a local shop in Dallas that would charge you, and never even touch the bike.

Yep....That is the story Lance told me.  Nothing like turning your own wrenches, if you have the support and time.

It's not hard, and there are a few shortcuts that make it easier.  I'd offer to help, but it will be a few weeks before I can set aside the time to do it.

Larry's right, there's not much difference.  The clearances are slightly different, but the procedure is the same.

Seems like asked him quite a few years ago, but with the hurricanes and all the work fundraising and his helping EVERYONE out, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and south tx,the best we got to do was put some pressure on a Dallas area vtx owner to give Bare back the tool he had borrowed and had "forgotten" to return to him. Bare is a real standup guy that I wish I new better than the internet provides. He "walks the talk".

SSSSSsssssnake

Gary, shoot him an email and see whether he can make it or not.
