03 vtx1800s valve cover gasket
« on: October 30, 2010, 07:10:53 AM »

Have oil leak in rear valve cover gasket. I am going to torque it to specs to see if that will stop the leak . Can the

gasket be changed without removing the motor(the manual says the motor must be removed to take rear head off).

I am not to sure about your question because you say the valve cover is leaking, but you say the manual says to remove the head. to replace the valve cover gasket i wouldn't think you should have to take the head off

My cylinder head gasket leaks a small amount over several hundred miles. It shows up on the fin of the rear cylinder right below where the gasket is. I just assumed that Honda used a Harley gasket there.  :stickpoke:

It's your head cover leaking. There is no gasket; they use a bead of silicone to seal it. The manual calls for engine removal, but several folks (ask Pogogolf) have done it with the engine in place. It's tight, but doable. You have to remove the old silicone, clean the surfaces, and apply a new bead of silicone to seal it. Neatness counts. Button her up and yer done :c.

There is an "easy" fix that is easier than removing the entire motor from the frame. You need to loosen/remove the 10 bolts that hold the rocker box cover on, it is a mix of 8 and 10mm bolts (mostly visible) but there are 2 that hide under the valve inspection covers also. With the bolts loose you can lift the rocker cover just enough to get a little RTV silicone in there, work it carefully in place with a toothpick or comparable item and then tighten everything back up. The leak is caused by the factory poorly laying the bead of silicone that should seal it up. ;)

If you keep the bike moving, it does not build up enough to drip onto the transmission cover.  :stickpoke:

The only time I notice mine leaking is after it sits for a week (while we were snorkeling in Grand Cayman.) :t

I don't care what other people think. They don't do it very often!
Of Course it's dirty. It's hard to clean when the tires keep moving.

is that why you see the Harley's leaking oil, they can't keep them moving?
