Title: Newbie riding up!
Post by: VTXGRL on November 09, 2006, 03:33:48 PM
Hey guys (and gals)!  Just got my '06 1300R in mid-October and am looooving it.  Traded in my old Magna (tho I kinda miss her, she was fast and good in corners) and bought a candy apple red R.  Don't have any pictures yet and I don't have any accessories... but hey, that's the fun part, spending years adding on, right?  Oh yeah, and having a 'wish list' on every conceivable accessories link you can bookmark.  I have a tank bag and a cargo net and look forward to the day when I get a Mustang seat for my arse.  So far I've only got 500 miles on her and I get to look forward in 100 miles to paying Honda $250 for my 600 mile service likely next week - "ouch" for a first visit!

I rest my ride in Grapevine so I hope to meet up with a few of you sometime.

Welcome VTXGIRL,

Check out the "DFW X-RIDERS" thread for the usual meets and greets.  Several of us meet every Sunday at Dukes (Beltline Rd. / Midway Rd.) in Addison around noon and head out around 1PM for a lunch run somewhere.  We occassionally make a stop at Wilhoite's on Main St. in Grapevine.  Looking forward to meeting you.  Ride safe!

Welcome VTXGIRL,

I'm a noob too and look forward to the Sunday rides in the future.  Right now I'm working on getting my bike registered.  If anyone tells you it's a piece o cake to register a Canadian registered bike don't believe 'em.

I've put about 1800 miles on the bike since getting it three weeks ago.  Loadz o fun!

Thanks for the greeting, Pops!  BTW, the $250 estimate came from Cycle Center of Denton.  What's/where's a better deal to get this service done?

If you are unable to do the oil change yourself, Tapper in Allen can probably do the 600 mile checkerupper for less than $250....   You might want to pm him and check before dropping "chrome" cash on an oil change.

BTW, Welcome to the Board....  Great group of DFW X'ers here.   :)

Welcome aboard, VTXGRL!

You should come to some of the local events.  We always have a few of us over at Duke's Roadhouse in Addison around lunchtime on Sundays if it isn't raining.   It's always an open invitation to anybody that wants to ride.

Hi JustinVTX, thanks for the invite, but I've unfortunately got plans tonight that don't involve 2 wheels... and that just sucks!

$250 for the 600 mile check up?  It's just an oil filter, 2 crush washers, and some oil.  DFWHonda down the street from you does that for ~$50.  It's about $20 if you do it yourself.

Heck, drop by the DFWFreedomriders meeting this Thursday (7PM at Spring Creek BBQ) (X-mas party is 12/1 with lots of give aways) and there is a good chance they'll be handing out free oil change cards (happens every so often).

Let us know if you need help!  :)

Welcome VTXGRL !!

Not so new here, but certainly not so old either.  I'm working on it.
Congrats on the Bike.  Got mine last May and I know how you feel,
hasn't worn off yet.

Thanks for all the welcomes!  Did a little riding yesterday but after being beat up by the wind for 2 1/2 hours, I gave up... call me a fair weather rider.  As for that 600 mile check up, the oil change is basically it?  Here's the email they sent me, "The initial 600 mile service on the VTX1300R is an in-depth service that requires a valve inspection and adjustment to be performed. The cost on that service is $245.14. The valve adjustment requires the engine to be completely cold so the bike has to sit without running for approximately 8 hours.".

I'm not that good on wrenching on this thing yet and I'm certainly not going to mess w/ my new toy all by myself w/ out supervision at first.  So am I getting a new one ripped or what? :-\

Can't speak for all bikes but when I did my 1st oil change at about 1000 miles I went ahead and checked my valve clearance (even though I could hear them) and they were alright. Took about an hour to pull the tank and timing cover and valve covers and check with feeler gauge, so yeah, basically you're getting ripped off. They shouldn't charge you to let your bike sit and cool off :o :o :o :o Call Liners  (817) 222-9344 and ask what they charge for an oil change and valve adjustment. They'll be less, I think. O0 O0

We  just about got blown off the Lake Worth Bridge coming to town and decided discretion was the better part of valor. Maybe next time. The wind and the dark and Friday nite crazies all together got the better of me.

Well this sucks.  I've been calling around today, including to Liners, and found that all of them suggested I let Honda rip me a new one since I bought the extended warranty.  If I ever try to put the warranty to use, they all said that all work should be done by a Honda mechanic.

ARGH!  Hindsight is always 20/20.

IF I WERE YOU I WOULDN'T EVEN WORRY ABOUT THE VALVES AND JUST GET THE OIL CHANGE. I'VE HAD ALOT OF OPINIONS FROM GOOD MECHANICS AND THEY ALL SAID THAT 90% OF THE TIME THEY DON'T EVEN NEED TO BE LOOKED AT UNTIL AFTER 3000 MILES.

Not being a mechanic, other than putting on some extras and such, I take mine to DFW Honda for any major work, and follow Honda's schedule of maintenance as close as possible.  I have the extended warranty also, and try to think of the service costs from the Dealer as a form of insurance.  If something major goes wrong, I might have to fuss a bit, but they did the work, have the records, and should stand behind it.  They can’t say that I screwed something up.  That’s my 2 pennies worth.

Now, if my X was paid for, and I was a mechanic, I might have a different outlook…

I like the fact that when we bought the wife's 1800 at D/FW they rolled service in with the cost of the bike and all you paid for was the materials, labor was free. They gave us a little card and we show it when we come in and nothing comes out of our pocket. I don't remember the exact cost, but I remember adding it up and is saved us about 2 grand.

That pre-paid maintenance plan is $300.00, but well worth it!  It covers all maintenance, from oil changes to valve adjustments at specified intervals.  My wife bought the package when we got her 1800, and it saves me from putting my name on Tappers list.  He does good work, but he stays very busy, and if you need a rush job, the dealer can get to you pretty quick, especially if you have the pre-paid plan.  I was told of an unofficial order in which pre-paid customers got bumped to the front of the line in front of ride up service requests.  Not sure if it is true, but we never had to wait too long for service on her bike.  I wish they would have offered it when I bought my X!

They offered that to me when I bought, guess I should have gone for it, but I didn't want to finance it.  Wonder if that's something I can buy now?  I talked to DFW Honda today and they want $290!  I bought a new bike so I wouldn't have to continue paying tons of money... it's frustrating!  Either that or I'm going to say screw the warranty and just have a certified mechanic do it.

You don't have to have all the service work done at a Honda dealer to maintain the warranty. You just have to have proof that the maintenance was done at the suggested intervals. Been dealing with dealership warranty for 30 years now and if you have proof of oil changes and such, you should have no problems with warranty. The chances of engine failure if you change your oil regularly are very small and I would think the majority of warranty issues are electrical, leaks, vibrations, etc.  Just my .02 cents
