just get a good handheld GPS, tape it on somewhere, and check it yourself.

WARNING: THIS IS NOT A RECOMMENDATION TO DRIVE AT UNSAFE SPEEDS.

Might even be getting a tax paid ride to jail at that rate....   ;D  What is supposed to be the top speed of a 1300 anyway?  I am not even sure what the 1800 will do?  I think I have had mine up to about 115 or so....

Justin find yourself a long stretch of road and I'll tag a long on Isabella and we'll see.....  I know she'll do 130mph......

Wait for it......

In 3rd gear!!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

oh i know i can get it up to 130. i've done peged it out at that plenty of times. all these "know it alls" on the other board are saying that the 1300 speedo is not accurate so i want to prove them or myself wrong O0 you would think that if it says 130 that your going 130. i'd be one pissed puppy if i got a ticket in a school zone for going 30 when my speedo said 25 >:( no wudda mean main O0

They're all off.  Practically no bike is accurate.  I can see that on mine at low speeds.  Mine gets as much as 10mph off at higher speeds (60-80).  I've been clocked by radar with the digital signs on the side of the road in 3 states and it was wrong on all of them.  It always showed higher on the speedo than actual.

I guarantee when it says 130 you're not doing 130.  Mine says 145 and I would be willing to bet I'm doing maybe 132/135.

On the busa I hit 175 lots and topped it at 185 twice.  True speed at 185 you're really doing about 175.  I didn't read the vtxoa thread, but I do know most speedo's are off.

That sounds about right....  I know at 70mph on the speedo on both of my bikes is wrong.  It is closer to 66 to 67mph.  I figure this error probably graduates with speed.  130 on the dial is closer to 115-120mph I'd figure.  GPS is probably the most accurate calculation besides getting the law involved.

It will also vary between bikes; I've confirmed that with radar.

checked both, the gps and the radar. the gps and radar were within 2 mph of each other, and both put my speedo off about 5-7 mph off on the fast side. speedo at 70 translates to about 65 actual. this is on an 03 1800C. fastest i've had the bike up to as indicated on the speedo is 138 which would mean i was actually doing about 133.

that sounds a lot better than 10 to 15 mph off like all these other guys are saying O0

Well, this other guy has been clocked showing 8-10 over on several occasions.  Not all of the bikes are the same.  I've got an 03 1800C as well.

Sometime soon I'll get our local TXR johnny law to clock me at several speeds and we'll put this to rest.

Just FYI when my 1800C was new I did some radar shots at 30 and 60. My speedometer read 1mph high at 30 and ALMOST 2mph high at 60. On my old Shadow my speedometer was 6mph high at an indicated 60.

Well no wonder y'all issue so many tickets.  Your radar is 20% high. ;D

On the VTXOA board there are literally tons of threads on this issue.  The general consensus is that the Honda speedo is 10% high.  (Show 80 - actual 72)  I know that I confirmed to my satisfaction both by GPS and comparison of 1 mile on the odometer vs 1 measured mile on the highway.  Finally, Honda just settled a class action suit on their cars for their odometer being 10% off causing the car to show 1000 more miles per 10,000 miles traveled.  As for the GPS being inaccurate - it is accurate to 15 feet.

I seem to recall that the "gearing" on the US speedos are the same as in countries using kilometers.  Only difference was the speedo face.  Don't know if that is true or not but seems to fit the error percentages.  The amount off is within "industry limits."

As for top speed - probably anything above 60 will kill you.  How dead do you want to be?

Post by: jackandangie on February 08, 2007, 10:27:47 AM
I've found that the majority of Honda Speedos are off by around 10%. Occasionally you get one that is accurate, but more often than not register about 10% more than actual speed.

My 1300 R wouldn't.  Got it to a bit above 115 on a good day one time.  May have done  a bit more but ran out of road.  Probably the windshield and all that extra weight from a plastic comb I had in my LardAss jeans held the speed down considerably. ;) :D

I have a 1300 and the most I have seen in the speedometer is about 125 mph with someone riding next to me in another bike and they were doing about 115 mph, one bike was a 1800C the other was a Busa... they both said that we were doing about 115 mph on their bikes, I know my R1's speedometer is also off.  I don't think the 1300 will do more than 115-120 mph, it does not make enough horse power to go any faster...

Beccas 1800 will not indicate anyting more than 135 mph but I have been next to her on my R1 and my sppedometer will indicate about 145 mph when I passed her  :D, either way I'm glad the 1300 does only 100+ miles per hour and that it sounds as good as it does...  yes the 1800's are faster but when you have to stop every 110 miles + or - for gas...  that takes away some of the fun

This is the best post that I've ever seen on this forum.  As far as top speed on a 1300.  Drop it out of an airplane. You're guaranteed terminal velocity which I think is about 120mph.   ;D  If you wanna go faster than that, tow it behind a Goldwing  ;D ;D ;D

I believe my best run ever was 13.69, and no other 1300 has beaten that time that I've run against.  There's one crazy Costa Rican on this board that beat me down the track a couple of times, but I whooped his shiney hiney down there once...and his times were still slower.  ;)

The 1800s that have run out there are getting around the 12.6 range, so we 1300 riders are only slower by about a second...at least I AM!!

There's an 1/8-mile track that I'd love to get on & race an 1800...the time difference would not be as big as on the 1/4-mile times.  Shoot, if I caught 'em sleeping at the light, I might actually take 'em.  O0

Oh Becca...where are you? 8)

Jason

If you drop it out of an airplane, I believe that the fall rate accellerates at 32 per second per second. I think that you can beat 13.69...of course...it is measured vertically....and requires access to an airplane  (is that 13.69 minutes?)

And if you shave all the hair off your legs, you can probably shave a couple of hundredths also. :o

12.49 is my best time as of the last time we ran.  Jeremy ran a 12.2something.  I think 12.25.  It's somewhere on this board.  He doesn't weigh much so he gets full potential out of the bike.   :P

Mine just has pipes, no power commander.  Jeremy has a huge intake and pipes, but no power commander that I know of.

Those were both 1800's though.

It's www.houstonraceway.com, located in Baytown.  We have fun running against each other and watching the cars & trucks run, too.  Most Friday nights they have the "friendly" races, but it's been awhile since I've been out there.
