Need some help
« on: May 17, 2012, 06:16:29 PM »

Have a question on something that maybe someone can answer. There has been a motorcycle that has been
abandoned in a hay meadow of my father in laws friend. I have been told I can go and get it. It has been there going on 6 days. Seat was off, battery is gone, ignition looks like it it was started with a screw driver. Also no plates on the bike. Bike is in decent shape but needs some help. What is the law for getting something like this
in your ownership?? I know you have to contact the owner but how? Run Vin? It has one but how do you find out if it was stolen?
Thanks for any help in advance!

If it's out in the county, call the sheriff. Report the VIN. If it's stolen, they will either recover it or call the owner to recover it. IF not, the sheriff's office should be able to tell you the procedure to seek a claim on the vehicle. IF  it was abandoned on someone's property other than the owner of the vehicle, there could be a claim for damages. *Maybe*  I think the first thing I'd do is see if it's stolen and go from there.  I remember years ago when I was stationed in the Army in Louisiana, it wasn't a very hard thing to do to get a title on abandoned vehicles. It was like 30 days.

Call ACORN.  I'm sure they can fiqure something out for you.  They seem to have ways around most laws and not get caught.

Property must be abandoned for a minimum of 30 days.  However, let say you decide to apply for the title and they run the plates/vin and find that it is stolen...who's word will be taken; yours?  I would call county or city depending on location in the municipality.

Life's journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally wornout, shouting..."What a Ride!"

I would bet that it was stolen. I had my KLR stolen from my back yard and never expected to see it again. After about 2 years I got a call from the county sheriff, they had found my bike. The thieves had not been kind to it but it was good to get it back.
