An old Yamaha
« on: September 06, 2012, 11:46:16 PM »

Does anyone remember the 1985 Yamaha XJ700 Maxim X? I used to ride one for a short time. It was fast. I know someone that's considering getting rid of one but I have no idea of what it's worth anymore. I've heard that they are a collector's item now.

Don't confuse a "cult bike" with a "collector bike".   :D

Thanks guys. The value on that bike has gone up in recent years.

Not long ago I had a 3 cyl 850 Yamaha it was a 80s something with a vetter faring and bags and trunk. I might have been a bit hasty in giving it away.

It was probably this one made in 79.

While I never owned it myself, a buddy let me ride and maintane his red bike for about six months back in 1980 while he went back home to Virginia.  It was a cruiser style ride and I liked the looks but didn't have impressive power for an 850.  Yamaha didn't make it very long.  79 may have been the only year model for it.

I went to take a look and got a surprise. Wonders never cease. It turns out that the bike in question IS the one I had back in 2003-2004. I sold it for about $1K when I bought the VTX.

700cc built by Yamaha to circumvent import taxes on 750cc and above in 1985. I picked it up for little or nothing and fixed it up to ride until I could find a big cruiser. I liked the liquid cooled, shaft driven smaller bike because of it's surprising speed and power.

It's not, by a long shot, in pristine condition but it still cranks up and runs great. Been sitting in a garage for the last few years.
